Mental Health and Racism
There is no doubt that racism has detrimental mental effects, but it is not widely known how deeply the consequences of racism can run in the mind.
Mental health has grown as a subject in the public’s eye over the past decade, with initiatives like Bell Let’s Talk and increased psychological support in post-secondary schools. However, these initiatives rarely address the struggles of the Black community in terms of dealing with a lifetime of racism.
At Family Fuse, we aim to diminish/eradicate the systemic racism in the Windsor-Essex education system, which we believe will set up future generations for a lifetime of equal opportunity and success as their white classmates. The vision is that while we plant the seeds and tear down the systemic barriers in the education system now, the mental health of our Black youth will be burden-free of the effects of racism in the future.
