Family Day Weekend Fun: The Virtual Early Years Carousel 2021

In the latest Connecting Conversations, we speak with members from the University of Windsor Bachelor of Education: Early Years Specialization program as well as former Associate Dean, Geri Salinitri. As a part of their Service Learning class, these students have jumped on the opportunity to create an event for the annual Early Years Carousel.

The Early Years Carousel is a series of 8 play-based activities, and they’re created and led by all of the second-year teacher candidates in the Early Specialization program. These fun, engaging activities range from finger painting to building your own home garden to an outdoor scavenger hunt and all can be completed from your own home. If you’re looking for new ways to bond with your child, this is the perfect chance!

The students have created social media accounts where they post the amount of materials needed to participate in these activities, as well as updates on the Carousel. You can find them on Youtube ( https://bit.ly/3oSqSBz), FaceBook (@earlyyearscarousel), or Twitter (@EY_uwindsor). In order to build community connections, the collective class of Service Learning has fundraised $700 which will be donated to various local organizations. The hope of this initiative is to bring greater awareness to the resources and supports that are within the Windsor-Essex community.

A goal of the class’ Carousel event is to bring awareness to resources like Family Fuse, as one of the students, Allie, states: “We understand that learning within the education system extends beyond the walls of the classroom. We really want to try and bridge any gap between the school and learning communities in hopes that we can really connect to the lives of the students.”

The group will be graduating in the spring, but a new group will take on the role of hosting the Early Years Carousel as the tradition seeks to foster the relationship of parents' role in the education system. Videos will be posted on Saturday, February 13, 2021 on their YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8q0oDIPaKVlu5ddYyx18zg.
